Plans for an Ambedkar memorial and Constitution Bhavan in Ghodegaon, in Pune district’s Ambegaon taluka, moved forward with a government-level meeting on the possible use of Agriculture Department land for the project.
The meeting was held at Mantralaya in Mumbai on October 27 in the presence of Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne and former minister Dilip Walse Patil, according to a report by Sakal – Pune. Agriculture Department officials discussed the availability of land required for the proposed Constitution Bhavan and memorial.
The meeting was attended by the Agriculture Department secretary, the agriculture commissioner and other officials. Representatives of the Constitution Committee, including its president Gautam Kharat, working president Gautam Rokade and secretary Prakash Sonawane, were also present.
The discussions covered the availability of land, the proposed construction and the administrative approval process. The report does not state that the land has been formally transferred, that a final site has been approved or that construction has received a sanction. The immediate development is the consideration of the land requirement by the department and officials involved in pursuing the proposal.
Walse Patil has been following up on the proposal, the report said. Supporters of the project have argued that the memorial and Constitution Bhavan would respond to the sentiments of residents in the Ghodegaon area and preserve the legacy of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s ideas.
Walse Patil described the proposed memorial as more than a physical structure, saying it would represent respect for the Constitution, the principle of social equality and an intellectual legacy for future generations.
The next stage will depend on the Agriculture Department’s decision on land availability and the completion of the administrative approval process. No construction timeline was provided in the report.
