A 33 kV electricity line failure disrupted power supply for up to seven hours across several Ghaziabad neighbourhoods on Monday, affecting water access for residents and causing operational difficulties for businesses in the Tronica City industrial area.
Supply was disrupted in Defence Colony, Bhopura, Krishna Vihar Kuti, Sonia Vihar Colony, Abhay Khand, Nyay Khand, Vasundhara and Vaishali, among other areas, according to a report by Live Hindustan – NCR. The outages occurred at different times across the affected localities, with some residents reporting repeated tripping and prolonged cuts.
The interruption also affected household water availability because residents could not operate electric water pumps. People in parts of Defence Colony, Panchsheel Colony, Krishna Vihar Kuti and Sonia Vihar Colony reportedly faced supply interruptions for about five hours from Sunday night into Monday morning. Residents said power fluctuated several times between 5 am and 8 am before another failure of the 33 kV line worsened the disruption. Some families said they had to buy bottled water from the market.
In Indirapuram, areas including the MLA Colony reported a complete outage from about 1 pm to 5 pm. Resident Vatsal Jain said elderly people and children had to remain without fans and air-conditioning during the interruption. A resident of Nyay Khand 1 said electricity was unavailable from 7 am to 9 am, followed by repeated tripping and another two-hour outage from noon to 2 pm. The resident estimated that the area remained without power for about six hours over the day.
Residents of Bhopura said recurring failures on the 33 kV line had continued for about three years. They claimed the line failed between 10 and 12 times a day in some periods and that complaints had not resulted in a permanent solution. Resident Mukesh Kumar said outages lasting four to five hours regularly prevented households from running water pumps and created drinking-water difficulties.
The disruption was also reported in Tronica City, where industrial units have been facing what entrepreneurs described as frequent unannounced cuts. Sunil Kumar Jain, president of the Industrial Welfare Association, said the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority had constructed and handed over two new substations to the electricity corporation, but the industrial area was still being supplied from the Mandola substation. He also said staff numbers at the substations were inadequate and alleged that the C-10 substation was operating at about 10% of its capacity.
Entrepreneur Arun Gupta said power interruptions during production forced machines to stop repeatedly, leaving workers idle and increasing costs. He added that the disruptions were affecting production quality and causing financial losses when goods could not be completed on schedule. The association has sought intervention from the chief minister and electricity officials and has also requested discussions with senior officers.
Executive Engineer Vipin Kumar of the Rupa Nagar division said the industrial-area disruption was caused by faults and that new components had been installed at the substation. He said a complete improvement proposal had been submitted and that the problem would be addressed after approval. Chief Engineer Naresh Bharti of Zone 2 said nearby lines were also shut as a precaution when one line developed a fault. He added that the Business Plan Part-2 included a proposal to separate the lines, which would reduce the impact on consumers after implementation.
