GCC nursing training fees for students from private nursing schools and colleges will double for diploma and B.Sc. programmes at Greater Chennai Corporation health facilities, while the fee for M.Sc. Nursing students will rise by 25%.
The revised charges will apply to students undergoing training at GCC Urban Primary Health Centres, Urban Community Health Centres and 24-hour hospitals. The decision followed approval by the Corporation Council at a recent meeting, according to The Hindu.
Under the revised structure, the annual training fee for Nursing Diploma students will increase from ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 per student. The charge for B.Sc. Nursing students will rise from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, while the fee for M.Sc. Nursing students will increase from ₹6,000 to ₹7,500.
The fee changes were set out in Government Order (D) No. 778, dated July 6, 2026. The order covers students from private nursing schools and colleges who use GCC-run health facilities for training. The Corporation’s network includes primary health centres, community health centres and hospitals operating around the clock.
The Council approved the revised fee structure despite opposition from Tiruvottiyur CPI(M) councillor R. Jayaraman. The report did not provide details of the objections raised during the Council proceedings or indicate whether the Corporation has announced any concessions, exemptions or phased implementation measures for students.
The decision places the municipal health network at the centre of the training arrangements used by private nursing institutions. Students enrolled in diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes will be required to pay the applicable annual charge when their clinical or practical training is conducted at the designated GCC facilities.
The revised fees are scheduled to be implemented across the Corporation’s Urban Primary Health Centres, Urban Community Health Centres and 24-hour hospitals. The Corporation has not, in the information available, stated the total number of students affected or projected additional revenue from the fee revision.
