Two people were injured after a 15-foot Ganesh idol fell from a trolley while it was being transported near Sheetal Talao in Kurla on Tuesday, officials said. The idol was damaged in the incident, which occurred as the trolley crossed a speed breaker during preparations for Ganeshotsav 2026.
According to Mumbai Police, the idol was being brought by a mandal in Dharavi’s Prem Nagar area from Bail Baza in V B Nagar. The trolley carrying the idol was being pulled near Sheetal Talao when the incident occurred, a police official said.
The idol fell from the trolley as it crossed the speed breaker and suffered damage. The incident took place during the transportation of the idol to its destination ahead of the 10-day Ganeshotsav, which begins in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on September 14.
The Mumbai civic body said two people sustained minor injuries in the incident. One of the injured people was taken to Kurla Bhabha Hospital, while the other was taken to Habib Hospital. Both received treatment and were discharged, officials said.
The injured were identified as Santosh Jaiswal, 28, and Rohit Jaiswal, 25, according to the civic authorities. Further details about the circumstances of the transportation and the arrangements used to secure the idol were awaited.
Following the incident, the damaged idol was immersed at Sheetal Talao, officials said. The account did not indicate whether any further action had been ordered by the police or civic authorities in connection with the incident.
The Kurla incident comes weeks after a separate Ganesh idol collapse in south Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar area left two people dead and at least five others injured. That incident took place on the night of August 23 during the arrival ceremony of the Bhuleshwarcha Raja idol.
According to officials, the Bhuleshwarcha Raja idol fell when the procession reached Balaram Merchant Road near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk in Bhuleshwar. Several injured people were taken to nearby hospitals, where two later died. The deceased were identified as Sanket Nevshe, 33, and Brijesh Hemant Joshi, 30.
Multiple agencies, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, Traffic Police, the 108 Emergency Ambulance Service and BMC ward staff, were mobilised after the Bhuleshwar incident. The earlier collapse had occurred during preparations for the same festival period, when large idols are transported through Mumbai’s roads for arrival ceremonies and installation.
The Kurla incident was reported as authorities and mandals continued preparations for Ganeshotsav 2026. The festival begins on September 14 and is among the largest annual public celebrations in Mumbai and Maharashtra.
