Gadkari Unveils Plan to Electrify National Highways

Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has revealed ambitious plans to electrify the country’s national highways. The plan involves installing overhead electric cables, similar to those used on railway lines, along major highways. The initial pilot runs for this electrification project are set to take place on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway and the Ring Road in Nagpur.

Gadkari explained that trolleybuses would operate along the route between Delhi and Jaipur, utilising the overhead electric cables for power. These buses would complete their journey by traveling around the ring road in Jaipur before returning to Delhi.

This endeavour to electrify national highways aligns with the Indian government’s broader goals of promoting electric mobility and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

India has been making significant strides in adopting electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure, with various incentives and policies in place to encourage the EV industry’s growth. Electrifying major highways is another step toward achieving cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
