Construction of steel flyovers and an underpass at IIIT Hyderabad Junction has intensified congestion across Gachibowli, with Cyberabad Traffic Police extending road closures and diversions for another 90 days, according to Telangana Today. The works are affecting routes connecting Hitec City, the Financial District, Lingampally and Kokapet.
The construction activity has narrowed usable road space around the junction, where steel and plastic barricades have been placed on all four sides of the intersection. Commuters cited by the report said the barricades were occupying a considerable portion of the motorable carriageway, contributing to heavy daily congestion and longer journeys through the corridor.
The works involve multi-level steel flyovers and an underpass intended to improve movement through the IIIT Hyderabad Junction area. However, the intensive construction phase has created immediate difficulties for road users, particularly on routes that carry traffic between Hyderabad’s major technology and residential districts.
Commuters also raised concerns about the visibility of the barricades after dark. They said some barriers lacked sufficiently visible reflective tape and blinking LED markers, making it harder for motorists to identify restricted sections and navigate the diversions safely at night.
The reported 90-day extension means that the disruption will continue beyond the initial closure period. The extension is significant for daily commuters because the affected roads serve a large technology and employment corridor, where even localised restrictions at a major junction can slow traffic across connected routes.
Road users have not opposed the flyover and underpass projects themselves. Instead, they have urged the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation, traffic police and contractors to reduce the length of road sections closed at any one time. The request is for construction to proceed in phases, with one stretch completed and cleared before another is blocked.
“Contractors should work in phases, fully clearing one stretch before closing another, saving commuters time and fuel,” Aishwarya Menon, a fashion designer from Masjid Banda, was quoted as saying.
The report also highlights a coordination challenge that commonly accompanies large urban road projects: construction progress has to be balanced against the need to keep key movement corridors operational. In Gachibowli, the issue is particularly visible because the junction links several fast-growing employment, commercial and residential areas.
For the duration of the extended closures and diversions, commuters will face continued disruption around the junction. The immediate demands raised by road users are shorter barricaded stretches, phased construction and better lighting and reflective safety measures after dark. The 90-day extension announced by Cyberabad Traffic Police remains the next stated operational milestone for the affected routes.
