Residents’ representatives in Hyderabad’s Cyberabad area have given Cyberabad Municipal Corporation officials 15 days to address damage caused by the collapse of an allegedly illegal seven-storey building in Gachibowli, warning that they will pursue legal action if compensation and repairs are not secured.
The United Federation of RWAs (Uferwas), Cyberabad chapter, said the collapse at Jaya Darsini Residency in Anjayya Nagar had severely damaged portions of flats in a neighbouring apartment complex. The building collapsed on August 22, killing two workers, according to a report by Telangana Today.
In an official release, Uferwas said the collapsed structure had been built on a 75-square-yard plot and had destroyed bedrooms in the GHMC-approved apartment complex. The residents’ body said affected flat owners had been left without homes and had lost a substantial part of their life savings.
Uferwas alleged that no compensation had been paid and that no action had been taken against the builder. It said authorities had so far provided assurances and collected samples, but had not addressed the immediate financial and structural consequences faced by residents.
The organisation has demanded the immediate release of the structural safety report connected to the incident. It has also sought repair or reconstruction of the damaged flats at the expense of the alleged violator or the government, along with full compensation for property losses and rental expenses.
Uferwas further demanded that the remaining portion of the allegedly illegal structure be demolished and that disciplinary action be taken against officials who allowed the construction. It has also called for a structural safety audit of all buildings in the Anjayya Nagar lane, widening the issue beyond the single collapsed structure.
The dispute places the focus on the responsibilities that follow a building collapse: securing the site, determining structural safety, identifying the parties responsible for unauthorised construction, documenting damage to neighbouring properties and establishing who will pay for repairs or temporary accommodation. The report does not specify whether the civic body has completed its structural assessment or initiated action against the builder.
Uferwas said it would pursue the matter jointly with the Jaya Darsini Residency Welfare Association. If the civic body fails to act within 15 days, its members said they would advise the association to approach the court for compensation. The organisation also said it would separately file a public interest litigation petition on behalf of victims of illegal construction across Cyberabad.
The next stated steps are the release of the structural safety report, a decision on repairs or reconstruction, action regarding the remaining structure and consideration of the proposed legal proceedings if the 15-day deadline passes without a resolution.
