Gachibowli Building Collapse Triggers 15-Day Compensation Ultimatum

Residents’ groups in Cyberabad have threatened legal action against the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) unless it addresses within 15 days the deaths, property damage and displacement linked to the collapse of an allegedly illegal building in Gachibowli.

The United Federation of RWAs (Uferwas), Cyberabad chapter, said the seven-storey structure at Jaya Darsini Residency in Anjayya Nagar collapsed on August 22, killing two workers and severely damaging portions of flats in the neighbouring GHMC-approved apartment complex. The organisation said several residents had lost bedrooms, homes and significant personal savings as a result of the collapse.

In an official release, Uferwas alleged that the building had been constructed on a 75-square-yard plot and that no compensation had been paid to affected flat owners. It also alleged that action had not been taken against the builder, while officials had so far provided assurances and collected samples.

The residents’ federation has demanded the immediate release of the structural safety report connected to the collapse. It has also sought the repair or reconstruction of damaged flats at the expense of the party responsible for the alleged violation or, failing that, the government. Its demands include full compensation for property losses and rental expenses incurred by displaced residents.

Uferwas has further called for the demolition of the remaining portion of the allegedly illegal structure and disciplinary action against officials who allowed it to be built. It has also sought a structural safety audit of all buildings in the lane in Anjayya Nagar, extending the issue beyond the single collapsed structure.

The organisation said it would pursue the matter jointly with the Jaya Darsini Residency Welfare Association. If the civic body does not respond within the 15-day period, Uferwas said it would advise the association to approach the court seeking compensation for the affected residents.

Uferwas also announced plans to file a public interest litigation petition on behalf of victims of illegal construction across Cyberabad. The proposed legal action would shift the dispute from an individual building collapse to a wider question of construction oversight, enforcement and protection for residents living near unauthorised structures.

The reported demands place responsibility on the civic authorities to establish the cause of the collapse, disclose the structural safety findings and clarify what approvals and inspections were carried out before the building was constructed. The source report did not state whether the CMC had accepted the demands, released the safety report or initiated disciplinary proceedings against officials.
