Southern Railway is altering the terminals of four express services serving Chennai Egmore during September and October, with trains instead terminating or originating at Tambaram, Mambalam or Chennai Beach on specified dates. The temporary changes are linked to ongoing redevelopment works at one of Chennai’s principal long-distance rail terminals.
Passengers using Chennai Egmore will face another phase of operational changes as four express trains are temporarily shifted away from the station on select dates between September 4 and October 15 to facilitate ongoing redevelopment works. The affected services connect Chennai with Mannargudi, Tiruchchirappalli, Mumbai and Salem.
The Mannargudi–Chennai Egmore Express will terminate at Tambaram instead of Egmore from September 4 to October 13. In the opposite direction, the service will originate from Tambaram from September 5 to October 14, with a reported departure time of 11.25 pm.
The Tiruchchirappalli–Chennai Egmore Rockfort Superfast Express will be short-terminated at Mambalam from September 9 to 15 and again from September 21 to October 14. The Mumbai CSMT–Chennai Egmore Superfast Mail will terminate at Chennai Beach from September 12 to 15.
The Salem–Chennai Egmore Superfast Express, Train No. 22154, will also terminate at Mambalam from September 12 to 15. Its Chennai–Salem counterpart is scheduled to originate from Chennai Beach instead of its normal Egmore terminal from September 13 to 16.
A fifth service, the Thanjavur–Chennai Egmore Uzhavan Express, is not being shifted to another terminal under this announcement but will face regulation near Mambalam/Kodambakkam: a 20-minute delay from September 16 to 19 and a 30-minute delay from September 22 to October 15.
The disruption is part of a longer sequence of temporary terminal changes associated with Egmore’s redevelopment. Southern Railway has already shifted multiple services to Tambaram and Mambalam during earlier construction phases, including an August 5–20 operating block.
Southern Railway describes the larger redevelopment as a major overhaul of Egmore, including new terminal buildings, a 14,000 sq m departure concourse, 44 lifts, 31 escalators and a through-roof covering the platforms.
