Enhancing Road Safety A Step Towards Sustainability

The state transport department has broadened its enforcement scope to include highways and rural areas. This strategic expansion is part of a concerted effort to curb traffic violations and reduce the alarming rates of fatalities on the roads, which reached a staggering 7,854 deaths in 2023. With Ahmedabad reported as the deadliest district, claiming 870 lives—335 of which were in rural regions—the urgency for stricter enforcement has never been more pronounced.

Under the newly issued gazette notification, police officers ranked as head constables and above, alongside officials from the motor vehicles department, are now authorised to impose on-the-spot fines. Previously, traffic fines were largely restricted to urban municipal jurisdictions, limiting enforcement effectiveness in less populated, rural settings. This shift not only signifies a proactive approach to road safety but also aims to encourage compliance with essential regulations, such as helmet use for two-wheeler riders, which has been notably low.

Data indicates that two-wheelers were involved in nearly 3,628 of the recorded fatalities, highlighting a pressing need for improved safety measures in this segment. The Gujarat Road Safety Authority (GRSA) revealed Morbi district’s alarming statistic of 21.43 deaths per lakh population, further underscoring the urgency for stringent law enforcement in rural areas, where awareness of road safety norms is often inadequate. The superintendent of police has confirmed that this enhanced enforcement will begin to roll out across police stations, although implementation may be moderated during the festive season to accommodate heightened travel. This approach is not just about imposing fines; it’s a crucial step towards fostering a culture of safety and responsibility on the roads, ultimately aiming to protect lives.

Sustainability also emerges as a theme in this discourse, as a reduction in traffic fatalities contributes to healthier communities and promotes responsible use of public infrastructure. By empowering law enforcement and engaging the community in road safety initiatives, Gujarat is taking strides towards not only improving immediate road conditions but also ensuring a safer, more sustainable future for its residents.
