Earthquake in Chikkaballapur Triggers Low-Intensity Safety Alert

A 2.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapura district at 3.29 am on Saturday, with the state disaster monitoring agency reporting low intensity and no expected harm to the local community.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre said the epicentre was near Somasettyhalli village in Gouribidanur taluk. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 km, according to a statement issued by the agency.

The epicentre was located 2.53 km southwest of Taridalu Gram Panchayat and 4.30 km northwest of Alipura Gram Panchayat. It was also around 33 km northwest of Chikkaballapur city, the KSNDMC said.

According to the agency’s seismic intensity assessment, the tremor may have been felt within a radial distance of 20 km to 30 km from the epicentre. However, the observed intensity was low, and the KSNDMC said the earthquake would not cause harm to the local community. It added that local vibrations could still be felt in nearby areas.

The incident places the role of local seismic monitoring and public communication at the centre of the immediate response. The KSNDMC’s assessment identified the epicentre as falling within Seismic Zone II and said the region had no structural discontinuities.

The agency advised residents not to panic, citing the low magnitude and intensity recorded in the event. No damage or casualties were reported in the supplied statement. The KSNDMC’s seismic intensity assessment and public advisory remain the latest official information on the earthquake.
