Durg Infrastructure Transformation Gains Momentum with Expressways and Metro Projects

Durg, a prominent city in Chhattisgarh, is undergoing a significant transformation with a series of infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, industrial capacity, and urban development.

A major development is the construction of the Durg-Raipur-Arang Expressway, a 92 km six-lane, access-controlled greenfield expressway under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. This expressway is designed to reduce travel time between Durg and Raipur to approximately 20 minutes, passing through key areas such as Anjora, Patora, Supkona, Abhanpur, and Naya Raipur before terminating at Arang. The project commenced in June 2023 and is scheduled for completion by May 2025.

In addition, the proposed Raipur-Hyderabad Expressway, spanning 530 km, will traverse through Durg, connecting it to major cities like Rajnandgaon, Gadchiroli, and Hyderabad. This expressway aims to bolster trade and mobility across central and southern India. The Chhattisgarh government has allocated INR 5 crore for a feasibility study of the Raipur-Durg metro rail project. This initiative aims to modernize urban transport, reduce congestion, and provide efficient connectivity between the two cities. The proposed metro rail link is expected to benefit a large section of commuters between Durg and Raipur.

Durg is also witnessing industrial growth with new manufacturing projects. A conveyor belt manufacturing unit in Bhilai aims to produce 20,000 meters of conveyor belts annually, while an agricultural tools manufacturing project in Kandarka aims to produce 1,050 metric tons per annum of equipment such as harrows, scarifiers, and cultivators. Both projects have received the necessary environmental clearances, signaling a boost to the local manufacturing sector.NSPCL (NTPC-SAIL Power Company Limited), a joint venture between NTPC and SAIL, operates a captive power plant in Bhilai, Durg, with a total installed capacity of 814 MW.

The company has plans for further capacity addition, including a proposed 250 MW unit in Bhilai, to meet the growing power demands of the region. These multifaceted infrastructure projects are poised to redefine Durg’s economic and urban profile, positioning the city as a key player in Chhattisgarh’s development trajectory. The integration of expressways, metro rail, and industrial projects reflects a comprehensive approach to urban development, aiming to create a sustainable and efficient urban environment.

As Durg continues to evolve with these developments, it is set to become a model for integrated urban planning and infrastructure development in the region.
