Delhi’s proposed Chandgiram Akhara flyover has remained stalled for a year because the Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) have not finalised a design that accounts for the planned RRTS corridor beneath it.
The flyover is intended to reduce congestion at the Chandgiram Akhara traffic signal, where heavy vehicle movement regularly slows traffic. The Delhi government has already approved ₹183 crore for the project, but construction has not begun and the approval process cannot move forward until the design issue is resolved.
The main technical challenge is the proposed NCRTC Karnal line, which is planned to pass below the flyover. The road structure and the rail line must be designed together so that construction and future operation of both pieces of infrastructure can be carried out safely and without physical conflicts.
The Delhi government has directed the PWD to coordinate with NCRTC and take the project forward. However, the two agencies have not yet reached agreement on the design. The unresolved coordination has kept the project from progressing beyond the planning and approval stage.
A senior PWD official said the design of the RRTS plan had not yet been finalised. The official said the department would be able to proceed only after the design received final approval. According to the official, PWD officials remain in regular contact with NCRTC and discussions are continuing.
The flyover was planned to ease traffic movement at the signal and improve the flow of vehicles along the route. Its delay means motorists will continue to face congestion at the junction, while the government’s approved infrastructure allocation remains tied to a project that has yet to enter construction.
The PWD has said that there is no delay from its side in advancing the plan and that discussions with RRTS officials are ongoing. Further action will depend on finalising the coordinated design and securing the necessary approval.
