Delhi’s neighbourhood-level waste management push is expanding, with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) claiming that 826 colonies have adopted a zero-waste model. The approach shifts part of the city’s waste burden away from landfills by promoting segregation, local composting and recycling. But the wider challenge remains significant: public records indicate that coverage and processing levels are still uneven across the capital.

The zero-waste colonies model is based on a simple change in how household waste moves through the city. Wet waste is treated close to where it is generated, while recyclable material is separated and sent into recycling channels. This can reduce the volume requiring long-distance transportation and potentially lower pressure on landfill sites. For residents, the biggest operational requirement is segregation at source. Food scraps, vegetable peels and other biodegradable material can be composted locally and reused in parks and green spaces. Paper, plastic, glass and metals can instead enter recycling streams. The system, however, depends heavily on households, collection workers and local management maintaining separate waste streams throughout the process. Navjeevan Vihar illustrates how decentralised processing can work at neighbourhood scale. The South Delhi colony, home to around 280 families, has been processing about 125 kg of wet waste each day through local composting systems.

Its compost is used within the community’s green areas, while dry waste is channelled towards recycling. The colony has previously reported diverting its waste from landfills for several years. Other neighbourhoods have adopted different approaches depending on space and population density. Where land is available, compost pits can handle biodegradable waste. In more compact settlements, mechanical organic-waste converters can provide an alternative. This distinction matters for Delhi, where housing patterns range from planned colonies and group housing to dense, mixed-use neighbourhoods. The economic implication extends beyond landfill capacity. Less waste transported across the city can mean lower collection and haulage requirements, while recovered materials retain value through recycling. Local composting can also reduce demand for externally sourced soil conditioners in parks and landscaped areas.

Yet scale remains the key test. A recent Delhi pollution-control document recorded an average source-segregation level of about 60% for MCD areas and listed 676.2 zero-waste colonies or institutes, showing that the reported 826 figure requires further official reconciliation. For Delhi, the next phase will depend less on isolated success stories and more on whether decentralised processing can become reliable across different income groups and neighbourhood types. Consistent segregation, accountable collection and measurable diversion from landfills will determine whether zero-waste colonies become a citywide waste-management system rather than a collection of local examples.
