New Delhi: Delhi’s push towards decentralised waste management has gathered pace with the installation of a community composting system at a residential housing society in Rohini, signalling a broader effort to reduce landfill dependence by treating biodegradable waste where it is generated. The initiative reflects an increasing focus on neighbourhood-level waste processing as the capital grapples with mounting municipal solid waste and limited landfill capacity.

The newly installed composting unit has been introduced in a residential complex in Rohini Sector 15, where civic authorities expect households to process kitchen and other biodegradable waste within the premises instead of relying entirely on municipal collection and transportation. The move aligns with the city’s long-term objective of improving waste segregation and encouraging local treatment systems that reduce pressure on disposal sites. Officials overseeing the initiative said the technology enables around 10 kilograms of biodegradable waste to be converted into compost over a period of roughly 40 days through a biological decomposition process. Designed as an enclosed system, the unit is intended to minimise odour, making it suitable for apartment complexes and other dense residential neighbourhoods where conventional composting often faces practical challenges. The Wet Waste Composting model is increasingly being viewed by urban planners as a critical element of sustainable city management. Decentralised treatment reduces the volume of waste transported across the city, lowers associated fuel consumption and emissions, and supports compliance with national solid waste management guidelines that prioritise segregation at source.

Experts in urban infrastructure note that residential communities play a significant role in determining the success of municipal waste systems. While city authorities can strengthen collection networks and processing facilities, effective segregation of organic and recyclable waste within households remains the foundation of efficient waste management. Without source-level separation, mixed waste continues to overwhelm landfills and reduces the potential for recycling and resource recovery. In recent months, civic agencies have also expanded investments in mechanised sanitation equipment and modern waste management infrastructure as part of wider efforts to improve urban cleanliness. However, environmental specialists argue that decentralised solutions such as Wet Waste Composting offer longer-term benefits by creating local circular economies, where organic waste is converted into compost that can support community gardens, landscaped areas and urban green spaces.

For rapidly growing cities such as Delhi, the challenge extends beyond waste collection to ensuring sustainable disposal and resource recovery. As residential development intensifies, neighbourhood-scale composting systems could become an increasingly important component of climate-resilient urban infrastructure, provided housing societies, resident associations and civic authorities collaborate to maintain segregation practices and community participation. The success of such initiatives will ultimately depend not only on technology adoption but also on consistent citizen engagement, operational monitoring and integration with the city’s wider waste management strategy aimed at reducing landfill dependency over the coming years.
