Delhi saw a modest easing in temperatures after rain and thunderstorms across several parts of the capital, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting another spell of light to moderate rain in parts of the city. The immediate relief comes with persistent humidity, keeping outdoor conditions uncomfortable and highlighting the pressure monsoon rainfall places on roads, drainage and everyday urban mobility.
The capital recorded temperatures below the seasonal average during the latest observation period. The minimum was reported at around 26°C, while the maximum remained close to 31°C, according to the weather data provided. The IMD’s forecast for August 12 points to generally cloudy conditions, with temperatures potentially reaching 34–36°C and minimum temperatures around 24–26°C. Rainfall has not been evenly distributed across Delhi. Mayur Vihar recorded 38 mm in the 24-hour period cited in the weather assessment, while Rajghat received 10.6 mm. Noida, which forms part of the wider NCR urban system, recorded 27.5 mm during the same period. The uneven distribution matters for a city where rainfall can quickly expose differences in drainage capacity. Localised downpours can cause waterlogging on roads, slow public transport and increase travel times even when citywide rainfall totals appear moderate.
The weather also carries implications for the built environment. Repeated intense rain places additional demand on stormwater drains, road surfaces, underpasses and low-lying neighbourhoods. For urban planners, the challenge is not simply managing a single rainy day but improving the ability of infrastructure to absorb and move water during increasingly variable weather events. Humidity remains another concern for residents. Even when temperatures fall, high moisture levels can limit the perceived relief from heat. The combination of warmth and humidity can make commuting, outdoor work and other daily activities more taxing, particularly for people with limited access to cooled indoor spaces. For businesses, transport operators and households, weather volatility can also create indirect costs through disrupted journeys, waterlogged streets and temporary service interruptions.
Better drainage maintenance, permeable surfaces, functioning green spaces and more effective rainwater management can reduce some of these pressures while improving the city’s long-term climate resilience. The IMD expects no major change in Delhi’s maximum temperatures over the coming week, suggesting that the immediate cooling may not translate into a sustained break from summer-like conditions. For the capital, the focus now shifts from short-term temperature relief to how effectively neighbourhoods and infrastructure can cope with the next round of rainfall.
