The Delhi voter list SIR deadline has been extended to November 25, giving residents additional time to submit claims, objections, new-registration applications and correction requests before the final electoral roll is published on December 22. The Election Commission revised the schedule after the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer sought more time and the Supreme Court urged the poll authority not to apply the earlier deadline rigidly.
The deadline for claims and objections was earlier October 30. Under the revised schedule, the claims-and-objections period will now run from August 31 to November 25, while notices and applications will be processed until December 15. The final voter list is scheduled to be published on December 22.
The decision followed observations by a three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant during a hearing on Wednesday. The court questioned why voters whose names had appeared in the 2026 electoral roll but who were left out of the draft list because they had not submitted enumeration forms were being asked to file Form 6, which is generally used for registering new voters.
The court said previously registered voters should receive an opportunity suited to their status. It also asked the Election Commission to continue accepting Form 6 and Form 8, reach out to affected voters and inform them about the process. Form 8 is used for specified corrections in the electoral roll, including changes of address. The commission’s counsel assured the court that the issue would be considered and that the deadline would be extended.
According to the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office, 4,88,256 Form 6 applications had been received by October 28. Of these, 2,12,400 were submitted by August 30 and 2,75,856 were received between August 31 and October 28. Officials expect most applications to be approved before the final electoral roll is issued, subject to scrutiny and clearance by the relevant authorities.
West Delhi recorded the highest number of Form 6 applications between August 31 and October 28, at 33,915. It was followed by North-West Delhi with 27,664 applications, East Delhi with 26,563, South-East Delhi with 26,535 and North-East Delhi with 26,324. During the same period, authorities received 21,603 Form 7 applications for deletion of names and 1,03,352 Form 8 applications for corrections.
The draft electoral roll published on August 31 contained 97,53,577 voters. The report said Delhi had around 1.45 crore voters before the revision began, while 47.56 lakh names were not included in the draft list because enumeration forms had not been submitted. The authorities issued 33,14,032 notices over mapping-related problems and logical discrepancies. By October 27, 31,26,576 notices, or 94.34 per cent, had been disposed of.
The Election Commission has directed the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer to publish the revised schedule in the gazette and ensure wide publicity. Submission of an application will not by itself guarantee inclusion or correction; each request will be examined and approved before the final electoral roll is published on December 22.
