Delhi election authorities have issued notices over voter-list discrepancies to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and several other prominent leaders as part of a verification exercise covering more than 33 lakh electors, according to a report by Jagran – New Delhi.
Gupta, who is registered as a voter in the Shalimar Bagh Assembly constituency, received a notice over an age-related discrepancy in her electoral entry. The Electoral Registration Officer said her details appeared on a list of logical inconsistencies identified during the Special Intensive Revision process, based on information provided in the enumeration form.
Officials said the notice was issued under the Election Commission of India’s standard operating procedures. A designated Booth Level Officer conducted physical verification and checked the facts and documents submitted by the chief minister. Following the verification, Gupta’s name was found valid for inclusion in the final electoral roll. The official publication of that roll is scheduled for November 4, according to the report.
Kejriwal, his wife Sunita Kejriwal, their son and his parents were also among voters who received notices. The five family members are registered in the New Delhi Assembly constituency. Documents from the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office showed that notices were issued to 110 voters in Part 51 of the constituency, located on K G Marg, with the Kejriwal family members included in the list.
The reported discrepancy concerning Kejriwal was that his name was not linked to the previous Special Intensive Revision record. The electoral authorities’ stated process requires a Booth Level Officer to visit the voter, verify the relevant information and examine the documents and facts provided before a decision is taken on the entry.
The notice process has also reportedly affected Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal, BJP leader Sudhanshu Mittal and former Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, along with Sachdeva’s wife and brother and other voters. The scale of the exercise means the notices are not limited to political figures, officials said, but form part of a wider review of voter details across Delhi.
The Aam Aadmi Party objected to the notices issued to Kejriwal and his family. Anurag Dhanda, the party’s national media in-charge, questioned how the votes of a three-time chief minister and his family could be removed from the electoral roll and described the action as a conspiracy. The allegation was reported alongside the election authorities’ explanation that notices are intended to correct discrepancies through verification.
The process places the responsibility on election officials to distinguish between data-entry or linkage errors and cases requiring changes to the electoral roll. For voters who receive notices, the next steps involve responding to the notice, providing supporting documents and completing verification by the designated booth-level officer. The final roll is due to be published on November 4.
