Delhi is preparing for a significant redesign of its road network, with transport authorities moving to replace signal-controlled intersections at 25 major junctions with a signal-free circulation model based on planned U-turn loops.

The shift, expected to roll out in phases over the coming months, could reshape mobility across one of India’s most congested urban regions and alter how millions navigate the capital each day. The proposed U turn traffic model marks a departure from conventional signal-based traffic management. Instead of halting vehicles at red lights, authorities intend to create designated turning pockets beyond intersections, allowing traffic to keep moving while drivers loop back to change direction. Officials involved in transport planning say the model has received in-principle approval and is now under technical review. For a city where road congestion costs both time and money, the implications are substantial. Delhi’s transport bottlenecks contribute heavily to fuel wastage, lost productivity and elevated vehicular emissions.

Urban mobility analysts estimate that stop-start traffic patterns increase fuel burn significantly, especially during peak-hour queues, making traffic reform an economic and environmental priority. The U turn traffic model is also being positioned as an alternative to expensive flyover construction. In dense parts of Delhi, acquiring land for elevated corridors has become increasingly difficult due to space constraints and high urban land values. Redesigning intersections, planners argue, offers a lower-cost intervention while preserving existing road widths. From a sustainability perspective, uninterrupted traffic flow could help cut idle-time emissions, a major contributor to roadside air pollution. Transport researchers note that smoother vehicle movement often reduces carbon output per kilometre, though outcomes depend heavily on road discipline, enforcement and pedestrian safety infrastructure.

That last point remains critical. Urban planners caution that signal-free corridors can improve throughput for vehicles but may complicate road-crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and elderly commuters if safety measures are not built into the redesign. Dedicated crossings, speed-calming mechanisms and accessible pathways will be central to whether the model delivers inclusive mobility rather than simply faster vehicle movement. The capital’s traffic strategy comes as Indian cities increasingly experiment with lower-cost, data-led road engineering instead of large-scale concrete expansion. For Delhi, the success of this redesign will likely be measured not just by reduced travel time, but by whether it can balance efficiency with cleaner air, safer streets and more equitable urban movement. If the pilot performs as intended, the city could establish a new template for congestion management one that prioritises smarter design over heavier infrastructure.
