Delhi traffic jam conditions worsened across several central and south Delhi corridors on Friday as light rain slowed vehicle movement and a Diljit Dosanjh concert at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium added pressure to roads around ITO, Ashram, Sarai Kale Khan, Lajpat Nagar and Lodhi Road. The disruption began during the morning office rush and continued into the evening, according to a report by Jagran – New Delhi.
Traffic moved slowly on routes connecting Sarai Kale Khan with Ashram and Nizamuddin, while congestion was also reported around Lajpat Nagar and the Outer Ring Road. In central Delhi, ITO and key roads in the Lutyens’ Delhi area experienced long queues. Ashram Chowk, Nizamuddin, Lodhi Road and Sarai Kale Khan were among the locations where motorists faced delays, with some journeys taking considerable time even over short distances.
The rainfall affected traffic speed from the morning. The report said queues formed at important junctions and road stretches as vehicles moved more slowly in wet conditions. The congestion remained in place through the day, overlapping with the expected arrival of a large audience for the concert at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
To manage the event-related traffic, the Delhi Traffic Police imposed restrictions and diversions from 1 pm until midnight around the stadium. The affected roads included Bhishma Pitamah Marg, Lodhi Road, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Arch Bishop Marg, the Barapullah flyover and internal roads in Lodhi Colony. The arrangements were intended to regulate traffic around the venue as concert-goers arrived and left.
The traffic police did not permit public parking around the stadium. Towing cranes were deployed to remove vehicles parked in violation of the restrictions. People attending the event were advised to use the Metro instead of private vehicles, according to the report.
The disruption illustrates how weather-related reductions in road capacity can coincide with a large planned gathering and quickly affect several connected corridors. The stadium is located near a network of routes linking central Delhi with south Delhi, the Ring Road system and areas around Nizamuddin and Sarai Kale Khan. As a result, restrictions close to the venue can influence traffic movement beyond the immediate stadium zone.
For daily commuters, the overlap of the morning office peak, rain-related slower movement and event preparations created different sources of delay across the city. The reported congestion was not limited to roads immediately surrounding the stadium; it extended to ITO, Ashram, Lajpat Nagar and other major routes.
The traffic police’s restrictions were scheduled to remain in force until midnight on Friday. The authority’s stated measures included diversions, a no-parking arrangement near the stadium, towing support and a public advisory encouraging concert attendees to use the Metro.
