More than 51 per cent of the 33 lakh Delhi electors issued notices during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls have been verified, according to the office of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer, with all claims and objections scheduled to be disposed of by November 30.
The poll panel said 17,03,515 cases involving electors flagged for either “no mapping” or a “logical discrepancy” have been verified so far on the basis of documents collected from them. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on December 4.
Booth-level officers are visiting electors who received notices to collect the required documents, the CEO’s office said. Electors do not need to visit government offices for hearings, according to the poll body.
The verification exercise covers around 33 lakh electors who were included in the draft electoral roll but were issued notices to establish their eligibility for inclusion in the final roll. Of these, 13.79 lakh electors could not link themselves to the electoral roll prepared during the previous SIR in 2002. Another 19.33 lakh were flagged for logical discrepancies in their enumeration forms.
Delhi had around 1.45 crore electors before the revision exercise. About 97.5 lakh electors were included in the draft roll, while nearly 47.5 lakh were left out after booth-level officers marked them under categories including absent, shifted, dead and duplicate.
The verification process has taken place amid a political dispute over the conduct of the SIR. Alongside the document-collection exercise, the Delhi poll body has intensified efforts to enrol eligible voters who were left out of the draft roll. Special camps were held at polling-station locations on Friday.
The schedule now places the next key administrative milestones on the disposal of claims and objections by November 30 and publication of the final electoral roll on December 4, as set out by the CEO’s office.
