Delhi Schoolgirl Death Raises Serious Questions Over School Safety

Police are examining CCTV footage, questioning teachers and school staff, and investigating the supervision arrangements at a government school in east Delhi after a 17-year-old Class 12 student died on the premises during school hours on Saturday.

The incident took place at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Krishna Nagar while a school inspection was under way. According to police sources cited by Millennium Post, the student had been attending her seventh-period class before seeking permission to leave. She was later found severely burnt in an area behind the guard room, near a water tank.

A call reporting that a student had been burnt was received at 11.58 am, Shahdara Deputy Commissioner of Police R P Meena said. A team from Krishna Nagar police station reached the school and the student was taken to Dr Hedgewar Hospital, where she was declared dead.

The investigation is examining how the student reached the area without being noticed by teachers or security personnel. Police have seized the school’s CCTV digital video recorder and are analysing the footage to reconstruct the sequence of events. The security guard is also being questioned about his location and duties at the time. Investigators have examined the attendance register and collected evidence from the site.

The crime team and Forensic Science Laboratory personnel inspected the spot. Police are also examining a bottle recovered near the body. These steps are intended to establish the sequence of events and determine whether any safety or supervision failure contributed to the incident.

Police have recovered a three-page note from the student’s school bag and are examining its contents. Officers are questioning her classmates, teachers, family members and friends while investigating several possible explanations. Police have not established a motive and have not confirmed the references to personal difficulties cited by sources as part of the inquiry.

The student’s family has questioned the possibility that she died by suicide and alleged that she could have been the victim of a conspiracy. The family has also raised concerns about how the incident occurred during school hours and questioned whether school staff responded adequately. These allegations remain part of the investigation and have not been independently established.

The case places attention on the operational safeguards expected inside schools: monitoring movement during class hours, maintaining effective security coverage, ensuring functioning CCTV systems and responding quickly when a student leaves a supervised area. The police inquiry will determine whether any breakdown occurred in these arrangements.

The investigation is continuing, with police reviewing the CCTV footage, forensic findings, witness accounts and other evidence before reaching conclusions about the circumstances of the student’s death.
