Delhi’s road network is set for three significant interventions, with the Barapullah Phase-III elevated corridor and Mukarba Chowk underpass being opened and two new flyover projects receiving foundation stones, according to the Delhi government’s Public Works Department (PWD).
Union home minister Amit Shah is scheduled to inaugurate the long-awaited Barapullah Phase-III project and the completed Mukarba Chowk underpass. He will also lay the foundation stones for the extension of the Modi Mill flyover to Kalkaji and a new parallel flyover at the Savitri Cinema junction, PWD minister Parvesh Verma said.
The Modi Mill extension and the Savitri Cinema junction flyover have been sanctioned at a combined cost of Rs 371 crore. The Delhi government has allocated Rs 150 crore for the current financial year and set a completion target of 24 to 30 months for both projects.
The Modi Mill flyover extension will run for 1.5km and have six lanes, with nine-metre-wide carriageways on either side. The design will include medians, crash barriers and railings. The project will cover several important intersections, including Captain Gaur Marg, Maa Anand Mai Marg, Lotus Temple Road, Masjid Moth Road and the Nehru Place bus depot.
At the Savitri Cinema junction, the proposed 900-metre-long, one-way grade separator will have three lanes. The structure will include 435 metres of elevated road, two entry and exit ramps, dedicated bus bays and redesigned junctions. The project is intended to address traffic bottlenecks affecting Greater Kailash-I and Greater Kailash-II, as well as CR Park.
The planned works also include improvements beyond the flyover structure. The Savitri Cinema project will feature revamped footpaths, cycle tracks, better drainage to prevent waterlogging and improved streetlighting. These elements are part of the project’s design for a junction that currently handles mixed traffic and movement between residential, commercial and institutional areas.
The Mukarba Chowk project has already been completed and comprises three underpasses near gate no. 3 of Haiderpur Badli Mor metro station. Two are for vehicles, while the third is intended for pedestrians and non-motorised transport.
The two vehicular underpasses are each around 50 metres long, 9.6 metres wide and six metres high. They will connect Badli and Rohini with Azadpur and Jahangirpuri, allowing commuters to avoid the congested Mukarba Chowk intersection and the flyover. The PWD estimates that around 15,800 vehicles will use the underpasses.
According to the government, the facility could reduce travel time by up to 10 minutes per trip and shorten the travel distance by nearly one kilometre. It is also expected to save around 58,000 litres of fuel annually. The pedestrian and non-motorised transport underpass will allow metro passengers to cross the Outer Ring Road towards Shalimar Bagh and Azadpur Mandi more safely.
The third major project in the programme is the 3.5km, four-lane Barapullah Phase-III elevated corridor across the Yamuna. It will directly connect Mayur Vihar in east Delhi with Sarai Kale Khan in southeast Delhi, creating a new cross-river link for traffic between the two parts of the city.
