Delhi Pedestrian Skywalk Planned at Nirman Vihar to Cut Traffic Risk

Delhi’s Public Works Department has planned a four-arm pedestrian skywalk at the Nirman Vihar metro intersection on Vikas Marg, aiming to separate pedestrian movement from traffic at one of east Delhi’s busiest junctions.

The proposed Delhi pedestrian skywalk will connect Nirman Vihar metro station, Vikas Marg East, Patparganj Road and the adjoining residential and local-sector areas. The four arms will meet at a central hub, with a combined centreline length of about 240 metres. Each arm is expected to be approximately 60 metres long and three metres wide.

The junction sees heavy movement of vehicles and pedestrians because of its proximity to the metro station, commercial establishments, residential neighbourhoods and several connecting roads. Commuters currently cross busy carriageways to reach the station and surrounding areas, creating conflicts between road traffic and people travelling on foot, according to officials cited in the project details.

The proposed structure will be independently supported and positioned around 5.5 to 6 metres above road level. The arrangement is intended to allow vehicles to continue moving below the skywalk while avoiding additional structural loads on nearby buildings and infrastructure.

PWD’s preliminary design includes weather-protected walkways with roofing and side glazing, anti-skid flooring, LED lighting and CCTV surveillance. These features are intended to improve safety and comfort during peak traffic periods and adverse weather conditions. The central hub is designed to allow pedestrians to cross the junction from all four directions without walking across the carriageways.

Each arm will have a staircase about two metres wide. Lift towers, approximately 12 metres high, are also planned to provide access for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and commuters carrying heavy luggage. The arm leading to Nirman Vihar metro station is expected to provide a direct interchange between road-level access points and the metro network.

The plan is currently at the consultancy and technical-assessment stage rather than the construction stage. PWD has invited bids to appoint a consultant for the project. The consultant will undertake detailed topographic surveys, detect underground utilities and carry out other technical assessments before the design is finalised.

The project will also require statutory clearances from the relevant road and metro authorities, an official said. The final design, implementation schedule and construction timeline will depend on the outcome of these surveys, approvals and subsequent project decisions.
