Delhi and its surrounding urban centres are preparing for a major transport overhaul as authorities advance three large-scale road infrastructure projects aimed at reducing chronic congestion across the National Capital Region. The proposed interventions spanning tunnels, elevated corridors and grade-separated interchanges are expected to reshape travel between Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad while easing pressure on some of the region’s most overburdened traffic corridors.
Together, the projects represent a combined public investment estimated at over ₹12,000 crore and signal a renewed policy focus on regional mobility integration. Urban planners say the initiatives could improve commuter efficiency and logistics movement in one of India’s most densely populated metropolitan regions, though execution timelines and environmental safeguards will remain under scrutiny. One of the most ambitious components is an underground tunnel corridor proposed between Shiv Murti and Nelson Mandela Marg in south-west Delhi. Planned as an approximately eight-kilometre link, the tunnel is intended to connect the Dwarka Expressway network directly with Vasant Kunj and south Delhi. Officials familiar with the proposal say the corridor could significantly reduce bottlenecks around Mahipalpur, Rangpuri and Dhaula Kuan, areas that routinely witness severe traffic accumulation during peak hours and airport-bound movement.
Transport analysts note that reducing idling traffic around these zones may also help lower vehicular emissions and fuel wastage, particularly along heavily congested airport access routes. However, experts caution that tunnel-led mobility projects must include robust ventilation, drainage and climate-resilience systems to avoid long-term operational challenges during extreme rainfall events. A second intervention is planned near Kalindi Kunj, one of the busiest traffic interfaces connecting Delhi with Noida and Faridabad. Authorities are preparing a six-lane interchange and flyover system near the Okhla barrage stretch to streamline movement across the Yamuna corridor. The project is expected to provide uninterrupted traffic flow between Jasola, Sarita Vihar, Noida and adjoining NCR districts. The Kalindi Kunj upgrade has wider economic implications because the corridor supports daily movement of office workers, freight operators and service-sector employees travelling between Delhi and emerging residential clusters in Noida and Greater Noida.
Urban economists say smoother connectivity could reduce travel unpredictability that often affects workforce productivity across the region. The third project under consideration is a nearly 20-kilometre elevated corridor linking AIIMS, INA, Vasant Kunj, Mahipalpur and Gurugram. The route is expected to bypass several saturated surface roads and redistribute traffic away from the Delhi-Gurugram expressway and Rao Tula Ram Marg. Officials indicate that construction activity could begin after final clearances and land coordination processes are completed. While the Delhi NCR mobility push promises faster travel and improved regional integration, mobility experts argue that road expansion alone may not permanently solve congestion unless supported by stronger public transport integration, pedestrian infrastructure and last-mile connectivity. As NCR cities continue expanding outward, the success of these projects may ultimately depend on whether they create a more balanced and climate-conscious urban transport ecosystem rather than simply accommodating more vehicles.
