Delhi-NCR’s regional transport network is moving towards another major expansion as plans advance for a new high-speed rail corridor connecting Meerut with Haridwar and Rishikesh. The proposed extension, which has received in-principle approval, is expected to strengthen inter-state mobility, improve access to economic centres and religious destinations, and integrate Uttarakhand more closely with the National Capital Region’s growing rapid transit system.
Authorities have initiated preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), with route surveys currently underway. Coordination teams from the central transport agency and the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been tasked with progressing land surveys and planning activities to avoid delays during the project’s development stage. The proposed Meerut Haridwar Rishikesh Rapid Rail corridor will begin from Modipuram, the northern terminal of the existing Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat network, before passing through Daurala, Khatauli, Muzaffarnagar and Purkazi in Uttar Pradesh. After entering Uttarakhand, the alignment is planned through Roorkee and Haridwar before terminating near Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh. The overall alignment is expected to cover nearly 150 kilometres, creating one of the most significant inter-state rapid transit links proposed in northern India. Urban transport specialists believe the corridor could reshape daily and seasonal travel patterns by reducing dependence on private vehicles and long-distance road transport.
If integrated efficiently with local public transport systems, the project may help lower highway congestion, reduce transport emissions and encourage greater use of mass transit between the NCR and Uttarakhand. However, planners also note that environmental assessments, land acquisition and ecological safeguards will remain critical, particularly in environmentally sensitive stretches approaching the Himalayan foothills. The Meerut Haridwar Rishikesh Rapid Rail project is also expected to become part of a much wider regional mobility network. Through existing and proposed interchanges, passengers would gain seamless access to the Delhi-Meerut corridor, the planned Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar route, the Delhi-Sonipat-Panipat corridor and the future connection towards Noida International Airport. Interchange stations in Delhi are expected to provide direct links with the capital’s metro network, railway terminals and interstate bus services, improving multimodal connectivity across northern India.
For businesses, tourism operators and logistics-dependent sectors, the expanded network could improve labour mobility, stimulate investment and strengthen economic ties between rapidly urbanising cities. Better rail connectivity may also support balanced regional development by encouraging growth beyond Delhi while improving access to educational, healthcare and employment opportunities across multiple districts. The proposal remains in the planning stage, with detailed engineering, environmental clearances and financial approvals still to follow. As the project advances, its long-term success will depend not only on faster travel but also on sustainable execution, efficient multimodal integration and infrastructure that meets the needs of growing urban populations without compromising ecological resilience.
