Delhi Model Parking Projects Target Traffic Relief
New Delhi: Delhi is preparing for a major expansion of organised vehicle parking infrastructure with plans to develop five modern parking facilities capable of accommodating nearly 4,000 cars. The proposed investment of over ₹661 crore is intended to address chronic roadside parking, improve traffic movement and support more efficient land use in some of the capital’s busiest commercial and residential districts.
The proposed Model Parking Projects form part of the city’s broader infrastructure agenda for the 2026–27 financial year. Municipal authorities have submitted the schemes for financial and administrative approval under the Delhi government’s development funding mechanism. Tendering is expected only after the projects receive the necessary clearances. Urban mobility specialists say the initiative reflects a growing recognition that parking infrastructure has become an essential component of city transport planning rather than merely an ancillary civic service. Congested roads caused by indiscriminate parking continue to slow public transport, increase fuel consumption and contribute to higher vehicle emissions across dense neighbourhoods. The largest facility has been proposed along Idgah Road in the New Karol Bagh–Nabi Karim area, where a multi-level parking complex with capacity for more than 2,100 vehicles is expected to serve one of Old Delhi’s busiest commercial belts.
Additional facilities have been identified for Shastri Park and Rani Bagh, while compact automated parking systems are planned in Pitampura and Shalimar Bagh, where land availability remains limited. Together, the five Model Parking Projects are expected to provide parking space for 3,996 vehicles. The mix of conventional multi-storey structures and automated parking technology is intended to maximise capacity without requiring extensive land acquisition. Urban planners note that automated systems can reduce the physical footprint of parking facilities, an increasingly important consideration in densely developed neighbourhoods. Transport experts, however, caution that parking infrastructure alone cannot resolve Delhi’s mobility challenges. They argue that new facilities should be integrated with public transport networks, pedestrian-friendly streets and cycling infrastructure to discourage unnecessary private vehicle dependence.
Effective pricing, digital parking management and strict enforcement against illegal roadside parking will also determine whether the investment delivers lasting benefits. From an economic perspective, organised parking can improve accessibility for local markets and commercial districts by reducing search time for parking spaces and easing congestion around business hubs. Better traffic circulation may also lower logistics delays for small businesses while improving road safety for pedestrians. The proposed developments now await government approval before construction timelines are finalised. As Delhi continues to balance rapid urban growth with sustainability goals, transport planners will be watching whether these projects become part of a wider strategy focused on cleaner mobility, efficient land use and more liveable public spaces rather than simply creating additional parking capacity.
