Delhi Metro Adds 40 Daily Trips as GRAP-2 Curbs Take Effect

Delhi Metro will run 40 additional trips every day as restrictions under Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-2) take effect across Delhi-NCR, according to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The move is intended to support commuters and encourage a shift from private vehicles to public transport during the pollution-control period.

DMRC said 20 additional metro trips will begin from Tuesday. These services will be added to the 20 extra trips introduced during the GRAP-1 stage, taking the total number of additional daily trips to 40.

The decision comes as Delhi-NCR authorities implement GRAP-2 measures aimed at responding to deteriorating air quality. The additional metro services are intended to provide more capacity for passengers affected by restrictions and other measures introduced under the pollution-control framework.

According to DMRC, increasing train frequency is also meant to encourage more people to use the metro instead of private vehicles. The corporation said a greater use of public transport could reduce the number of private vehicles on the roads and help lower pollution levels.

The announcement places the Delhi Metro at the centre of the region’s emergency response to air pollution. While GRAP measures can include restrictions affecting parking, construction activity and other urban operations, the additional metro trips address the mobility challenge created when authorities seek to reduce vehicle use.

For commuters, the immediate change is an increase in the number of metro services available each day. The report supplied by Jagran does not specify the lines, stations, operating hours or the precise timetable for the 20 newly added trips. It also does not state whether the additional services will be distributed evenly across the network.

The expanded services are therefore linked both to passenger convenience and to the wider objective of making public transport a more accessible alternative during the GRAP-2 period. DMRC’s decision follows the additional trips introduced under GRAP-1 and increases the total daily addition to 40 services.

DMRC has said the additional trips will continue as part of the measures being taken during the GRAP-2 restrictions. Further operational details, including the routes and timings of the added services, have not been provided in the supplied report.
