Delhi MCD Seals 8 Polluting Factories, Cuts Power in Shahdara

The Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) sealed eight industrial units and disconnected their electricity supply in Shahdara North after a joint inspection found them involved in activities linked to air and water pollution, according to the civic administration. The enforcement action was carried out by a joint team of the MCD, BSES and Delhi Police on Saturday.

The inspection covered industrial units operating in Ward 247’s Sadatpur and Ward 248’s Karawal Nagar. The MCD said five jeans-dyeing factories and three plastic-granule manufacturing units were identified during the campaign. The units were sealed immediately and their power connections were disconnected as part of the action.

The operation was conducted to identify industrial activities that may be contributing to pollution in the capital. The civic body said it is coordinating with other departments and agencies to conduct inspections and enforcement drives against polluting industrial units. The focus includes units operating in non-conforming areas, where industrial activities may breach environmental and land-use rules.

Non-conforming areas are locations where existing activities may not align with the officially permitted land-use or industrial-use framework. The MCD’s latest action places these areas at the centre of its enforcement effort, although the civic administration did not provide details of the specific violations recorded against each of the eight units.

MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar has directed deputy commissioners in all municipal zones to identify and stop polluting activities in non-conforming areas through continuous enforcement, the civic administration said. The instructions apply across the corporation’s zones rather than only to Shahdara North.

The commissioner also directed officials to establish accountability for the relevant authorities and ensure that action against units violating rules is taken within a defined timeframe and according to procedure. He said negligence at any level in efforts to control pollution would not be accepted, and that the administration’s objective was to control polluting activities and provide Delhi residents with a clean and healthy environment.

The Shahdara action highlights the role of coordinated enforcement in dealing with small and medium industrial units located within the city’s built-up areas. In this case, the MCD’s sealing action was supported by BSES through the disconnection of electricity and by the Delhi Police as part of the joint inspection team. The administration has not announced how many additional units will be inspected or whether further sealing drives will follow in the affected wards.

The MCD said inspections and enforcement against polluting industrial activities will continue in coordination with the concerned departments and agencies. Deputy commissioners across the corporation’s zones have been asked to carry out the directions and ensure timely action against units found violating applicable rules.
