The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has ordered a six-day-a-week deep cleaning drive across all its zones this winter, targeting dust and garbage on roads, markets, metro stations, educational institutions and public and residential areas as part of its anti-pollution measures.
The schedule assigns a specific urban area to each day of the weekly operation. Markets will be cleaned on the first day, metro stations on the second, Ring Road stretches on the third, Outer Ring Road and major arterial roads on the fourth, educational institutions on the fifth, and public and residential areas on the sixth.
Zonal deputy commissioners have been directed to supervise the exercise. Additional commissioner Pankaj Naresh Agrawal has been designated the nodal officer for overall monitoring and enforcement, placing responsibility for coordination and compliance at the senior administrative level.
MCD commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar inspected the cleaning operations and manpower deployment in West Zone’s Punjabi Bagh on Thursday. The inspection took place as the civic body began intensifying its winter response across the city.
In South Zone, the drive covered all 23 wards. The operation there involved around 300 additional sanitation workers, 20 tippers and 11 water tankers. Teams cleaned approximately 41 km of roads and removed nearly seven metric tonnes of dust and two metric tonnes of garbage.
The material was cleared from central verges, green belts, footpaths and roadside areas. These locations form part of the city’s everyday pedestrian and road environment, and their inclusion indicates that the operation is aimed at more than routine waste collection. It combines surface cleaning, dust removal, water deployment and additional manpower across areas used by commuters and residents.
The corporation’s zone-based schedule also creates a recurring operational framework for the campaign. Rather than limiting the exercise to isolated roads or individual neighbourhoods, the plan covers several categories of public space across the municipal area, including transport nodes, education campuses, arterial roads and residential locations.
The MCD has not provided in the supplied report a citywide target for the quantity of dust or garbage to be removed, nor has it specified the total number of workers, vehicles or tankers assigned across all zones. The South Zone figures offer the available indication of the resources being deployed in one part of the city.
The drive will continue six days a week under supervision from the zonal deputy commissioners, with the additional commissioner responsible for overall monitoring and enforcement.
