Delhi Illegal Firecracker Crackdown Nets 91.9kg, Five Arrested

Delhi Police arrested five people in five separate cases and seized 91.9kg of alleged illegal firecrackers from four parts of the city, including Ashok Nagar, Amar Colony, Shastri Park and Nehru Vihar, during operations reported on Friday. Police said the accused were allegedly selling or possessing firecrackers without valid licences.

Three operations by Northeast district police led to the arrests of Sunay Kumar, 42, Atul, 20, and Khem Chand, 54, and the seizure of 61kg of firecrackers. Police recovered 26kg, including sky shots, bullet bombs and chakris, from Kumar at Ashok Nagar Market. A further 13kg was seized from Atul in Ashok Nagar, while 22kg was recovered from Khem Chand near Mangal bazar in Amar Colony.

In another operation in northwest Delhi’s Shastri Park, police arrested Awadhesh, 50, after receiving a tip-off and seized 20.36kg of firecrackers. A patrolling team from Dayalpur police station later arrested Yasin, 40, who was allegedly selling firecrackers without a licence in Nehru Vihar. Police said 10.55kg was seized from him.

A senior police officer said all five accused were found selling or possessing firecrackers without valid licences. According to the officer, QR-code verification of one seized consignment established that the products were not certified green crackers. The statement was the police’s basis for identifying the consignment as non-compliant with the certification requirement mentioned in the report.

Five separate first information reports were registered at Jyoti Nagar, Shastri Park and Dayalpur police stations. Police said none of the five accused had any previous criminal involvement. The seizures and arrests form part of enforcement activity directed at unlicensed firecracker sales in residential and market areas of Delhi, with the cases now proceeding through the registered FIRs.
