A Delhi factory fire in the Khatta Colony area of Swaroop Nagar injured six people on Sunday after residents of a nearby building jumped from their homes while trying to escape the blaze. The fire affected the ground and first floors of a warehouse in Gali Number 2, with all six injured people taken to hospital and reported to be out of danger.
The Delhi Fire Services received information about the incident at around 11:05 am. Three special water tenders, four water browsers and other fire vehicles were sent to the site initially. As the fire spread, more units were deployed, bringing the total number of fire vehicles involved to 15 by about 11:30 am.
Fire department personnel brought the blaze under control at around 1:50 pm, after which all but two fire vehicles were withdrawn from the location, according to the report. The fire was reported at a premises located at Khasra Number 357/58 in the outer Delhi locality.
Police said the premises were being used for manufacturing judo uniforms and boxing gloves. The fire department said the warehouse stored rexine cuttings and cotton webbing, materials that were kept inside a building comprising a basement, ground floor, first floor and a second-floor tin shed.
The injured were identified as Priyanka, 28, her daughters Vanshika, 8, and Vani, 5, Santosh, 33, his daughter Tanvi, 8, and Vijay. Five of them were taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, while one person was taken to a government hospital in Burari.
According to police, none of the six suffered direct burn injuries in the incident. They were injured after jumping from the building in panic while attempting to move away from the fire. The incident brought attention to the immediate safety risks faced by residents living close to warehouses and manufacturing units in densely occupied urban neighbourhoods.
The fire affected the warehouse structure as emergency crews worked to contain the flames. The fire department retained two vehicles at the site after the blaze was brought under control. Further official details on the cause of the fire or any action concerning the premises were not provided in the report.
