A teenager aged between 15 and 17 was found dead in a drain near Jagatpur Metro Station in Delhi’s Wazirabad area on Thursday, with police investigating whether the death resulted from drowning or the body was dumped there after a possible murder.
The teenager’s identity had not been established when the report was published. Passersby spotted the body floating in the drain and alerted the police, prompting a response from the Wazirabad police station team and forensic personnel.
Divers from the Boat Club were called to the location and recovered the body after considerable effort, police said. The recovery operation was carried out near Jagatpur Metro Station, placing the incident within a busy urban zone where commuters and local residents use surrounding roads and public spaces.
Police said no apparent injury marks were found during a preliminary examination. The body was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to help establish the cause and circumstances of death.
Investigators are examining two possibilities, according to police. One is that the teenager may have drowned accidentally while bathing. The other is that the teenager may have been killed and the body later dumped in the drain. Police have not confirmed either possibility.
Nearby police stations have been alerted to help establish the teenager’s identity. The investigation will also have to determine how the body reached the drain and whether any additional evidence is available from the site or the surrounding area.
The post-mortem examination and efforts to identify the teenager are the next official steps in the case. Police will use those findings to determine the direction of the investigation and assess whether the death was accidental or involved criminal wrongdoing.
