In a milestone moment for Dehradun airport, a cutting-edge terminal building, constructed at a staggering cost of INR 486 crore, was officially inaugurated on Wednesday. The unveiling ceremony was graced by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, marking a significant leap in the airport’s capacity and passenger services.
Built in two meticulously planned phases, the new terminal spans a vast area of 42,776 sqm, with the second phase covering 14,047 sqm. The strategic development follows the operationalisation of the initial 28,729 sqm terminal space, leading to the demolition of the old terminal building. The revamped infrastructure positions the airport to efficiently handle a substantial increase in passenger flow, catering to 3,240 passengers during peak hours and boasting an impressive annual serving capacity of 47 lakh passengers.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) highlighted that the state-of-the-art terminal is equipped with modern passenger amenities, featuring 48 check-in counters, four conveyor belts, 12 baggage X-ray machines, and a parking facility accommodating 500 cars. The development aims not only to enhance passenger convenience but also to elevate the overall travel experience at Dehradun airport. Scindia said the new terminal building is a combination of culture, nature and modern architecture, which will strengthen industries, generate more employment and boost tourism in the area.
With a 2,140-meter runway and an apron boasting 20 parking bays, the airport is poised to facilitate seamless air travel operations. The completion of this ambitious project marks a significant investment in enhancing aviation infrastructure, aligning with the broader goal of bolstering regional connectivity and supporting the growing demand for air travel in the region.
The inauguration of the new terminal at Dehradun airport is a testament to the commitment to modernising aviation facilities, fostering economic growth, and providing passengers with a world-class travel experience. This strategic investment underscores the importance of continually upgrading infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of the aviation industry and the traveling public.
