CU Denver Hyderabad Campus Gets UGC Nod, First Batch in 2027

The University of Colorado Denver has received a Letter of Intent from the University Grants Commission to establish a campus in Hyderabad, with the first batch of students expected to begin in August 2027. The campus will be the first foreign university campus in Telangana and is being positioned as a new higher-education and workforce-development institution for the city.

The university has not yet finalised the campus location. A source cited by Times of India said the location would be locked soon after the Letter of Intent was issued by the Union government. Until the site is confirmed, details such as the campus’s land requirement, connectivity, construction timeline and relationship with surrounding neighbourhoods remain undisclosed.

The initial programmes are expected to cover business, computing, engineering and analytics. CU Denver has also proposed additional programmes to the UGC for approval, with those courses expected to be introduced from the second year onwards. The institution’s planned academic mix places the campus close to sectors that already shape Hyderabad’s employment and commercial identity, including technology, engineering services, analytics and business operations.

According to university officials, the Hyderabad campus will draw on CU Denver’s position as a public urban research university. Its stated priorities include academic quality, student outcomes, applied learning, social mobility and workforce relevance. Chancellor Kenneth T Christensen said the initiative would extend the university’s longstanding relationship with students from India while combining rigorous academics, career-aligned learning and real-world experience.

The project will be established with Emeritus, CU Denver’s strategic joint venture partner and a global education company. Emeritus co-founder and chief executive officer Ashwin Damera said the initiative was intended to bring globally relevant education closer to students in India. He also described applied learning, interdisciplinary education and career readiness as relevant to student aspirations and the needs of a changing workforce.

For Hyderabad, the campus could add another institutional layer to a city whose growth is closely tied to education, technology and skilled employment. However, the announcement currently establishes an approval milestone rather than an operational campus. The location, final programme approvals, construction arrangements, admissions process, fee structure, student capacity and academic delivery model have not been provided in the supplied announcement.

CU Denver was established in 1973 and is governed by the University of Colorado Board of Regents. It currently serves approximately 14,000 students and has a global alumni network of more than 100,000 graduates across over 100 countries. The university’s first India campus is expected to move towards its August 2027 intake after the site and remaining implementation details are finalised.
