In a stride towards sustainable logistics and operational efficiency, state-run rail hauler Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR) has commenced the evacuation of direct port delivery (DPD) containers from Gateway Terminals India (GTI) located at Jawaharlal Nehru Port through rail transportation, marking a significant departure from conventional road-based transit methods.
This pioneering initiative not only aims to alleviate congestion at terminal gates but also underscores a pivotal shift towards eco-friendly transportation practices, substantially curtailing emissions. The Direct Port Delivery (DPD) scheme is an essential component of modern logistics management. It allows import containers to be delivered directly to pre-approved consignees within the port precincts, eliminating the need for storage at container freight stations (CFS). This streamlines cargo handling processes and reduces costs. CFS facilities, which are authorised by the Customs Department, play a crucial role in reducing port congestion by facilitating off-dock cargo handling and expediting customs procedures. To enhance operational efficiency and environmental sustainability, CONCOR has partnered with Gateway Terminals India (GTI) and PSA BDP to move DPD containers via rail. Recently, two rakes laden with cargo from Sabic Innovative Plastics India Pvt Ltd were dispatched, traveling from the rail siding of GTI at Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Nhava Sheva to their destination at Varnama ICD in Vadodara, and finally reaching SABIC’s manufacturing plant. This collaborative initiative marks a significant step towards optimising logistics processes and minimising environmental impact.
GTI, a prominent player among the five private container terminals operating at the state-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port, has long championed the cause of rail-based container movement, aligning with its overarching commitment to sustainable business practices and operational excellence. The collaborative endeavour between GTI, CONCOR, and other stakeholders signifies a concerted push towards greener, more efficient logistics solutions, marking a pivotal milestone in the evolution of India’s maritime trade landscape.
The adoption of rail evacuation for DPD containers represents a significant departure from the prevalent norm of road-based transit, signalling a transformative leap towards environmentally conscious freight management practices. As India embarks on its journey towards sustainable development and logistics optimisation, CONCOR’s pioneering initiative sets a compelling precedent for the integration of green technologies and practices within the domain of maritime logistics, heralding a new era of efficiency and sustainability. “But the biggest impact is decarbonisation as rail movement offers a sustainable alternative to traditional road transportation, significantly reducing emissions. By leveraging rail infrastructure, GTI aims to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for the logistics industry,” the official said.
