Commercial LPG Price Rises Again to Rs 2,820 as ATF Climbs

Commercial LPG prices have risen by Rs 10 to Rs 2,820 for a 19-kg cylinder, while aviation turbine fuel (ATF) has increased by Rs 1.37 per litre, according to state-owned oil companies. The revisions took effect on Sunday and affect businesses such as hotels and restaurants as well as airlines operating in India.

The latest commercial LPG increase is the second consecutive monthly hike. The cylinder had already become costlier by Rs 62.50 on October 1, reversing part of the relief provided by reductions of Rs 192 in August and Rs 183.50 in July.

The price movement has been sharp this year. A 19-kg commercial cylinder cost Rs 1,740.50 in February before reaching Rs 3,113.50 in June. Prices subsequently declined through July and August, but the increases in September and October, followed by Sunday’s revision, have pushed the rate higher again.

Commercial LPG is primarily used by hotels, restaurants and other businesses. Unlike household cooking gas, its price is revised in response to market-linked factors. The latest changes reflect movements in international benchmark prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate, the oil companies said.

The price of a 5-kg Free Trade LPG cylinder for a new connection is Rs 1,903, while a refill costs Rs 782. These cylinders are sold at market-linked prices outside the regular subsidised domestic LPG supply system.

ATF prices have also increased for the fourth consecutive month. The fuel now costs Rs 138.50 per litre, compared with Rs 137.12 previously. The increase follows hikes of Rs 5 per litre in August, Rs 6.28 in September and Rs 16 in October.

ATF can account for up to 40% of an airline’s operating costs. The latest revision therefore adds to the fuel component of carrier expenses, although the supplied information does not specify whether airlines will change fares or alter operations.

Commercial LPG and ATF rates are revised on the first day of every month. The prices vary across states because of differences in local taxes, meaning the national figures do not represent a uniform final price for every business or airport.

Domestic LPG prices have not changed. A 14.2-kg household cylinder remains priced at Rs 942, while petrol and diesel prices were also left unchanged in the latest revision.
