In a proactive approach to address the anticipated surge in electricity demand during the upcoming summer, the Union coal ministry has urged the Indian Railways to significantly enhance its freight train operations. With a directive to operate between 600-650 freight trains daily from May to August, the ministry is gearing up to ensure an uninterrupted coal supply to power plants. As India ramps up its coal-fired generation capacity, aiming to meet the peak electricity demand projected at 256.5 GW in 2024 (up from the record 240 GW in 2023), the railways have already designated 500 trains to transport coal. These trains are expected to fuel approximately 208 GW, constituting 48 percent of the nation’s installed power generation capacity.
A senior railway ministry official revealed that the coal ministry’s directive underscores the strategic importance of a robust rail network to cater to the escalating demand for electricity during the summer months. The Indian Railways is actively working to augment its capacity, with plans to add 4,000-4,500 wagons (equivalent to 80-100 freight trains) by April. “In case demand rises beyond projections, the railways has formulated a contingency plan, allocating an additional 3,000 wagons (60 freight trains) dedicated to coal transportation during the summer,” stated the railway ministry.
This forward-looking initiative aligns with the nation’s commitment to bolster its energy infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of a growing economy. The coal-centric approach is seen as crucial in sustaining the power generation capacity that plays a pivotal role in supporting various industries and ensuring uninterrupted power supply across the country As the government actively addresses the challenges associated with increasing electricity demand, this concerted effort between the coal ministry and the Indian Railways serves as a testament to the commitment to reliable and efficient energy logistics, vital for India’s economic progress.
