CMRL Implements Rainwater Solutions Amid Chennai Metro Expansion

Efforts to mitigate rainwater management challenges amidst ongoing Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) construction projects have gained momentum, with alternative arrangements set to facilitate uninterrupted water flow expected to be operational within a month.

This assurance came from the Minister for Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) following his inspection of project sites alongside key officials from CMRL, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), and other pertinent departments. Addressing concerns over the impact of metro constructions on storm-water drains across the city, the Minister refuted claims of unauthorized developments, affirming that CMRL had prioritized securing necessary permissions before commencing any work over drainage systems. He underscored specific examples of proactive measures being implemented, such as the installation of diversion pipes near the Simpson subway in Kolathur Assembly constituency to channel stormwater away from construction sites. Elaborating on infrastructure enhancements, the Minister highlighted ongoing initiatives including the construction of concrete pipes and rainwater drainage systems along the Otteri Nullah canal, covering a stretch of 250 metres. Concurrently, desilting operations in stormwater drains have been initiated across various localities to bolster drainage efficiency.

Acknowledging potential disruptions to traffic flow due to construction activities, the Minister assured that strategic diversions would be enforced as needed to alleviate congestion and ensure smooth vehicular movement. The attributed to electoral regulations under the Model Code of Conduct during the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Minister assured that pending works would be expedited for timely completion. He emphasized that the majority of road infrastructure projects have been successfully concluded, underscoring a commitment to addressing infrastructural demands in tandem with metro rail expansions. Looking ahead, stakeholders including CMRL, GCC, and relevant departments continue to collaborate closely to navigate operational challenges and uphold urban infrastructure standards amidst Chennai’s evolving landscape. The proactive stance reflects a concerted effort towards sustainable urban development and enhanced public infrastructure in the region.
