Chennai’s Traffic Relief Strategy Multi-Level Parking Projects Unveiled

In a bid to address escalating traffic congestion and parking woes in Chennai, the Chennai Corporation has unveiled plans to construct multi-level parking lots at four strategic locations across the city.

These initiatives, categorized under ‘iconic projects,’ aim to streamline urban mobility and enhance civic infrastructure through public-private partnerships. Recognising the pressing need for innovative solutions to combat traffic congestion, the Chennai Corporation has embarked on a comprehensive plan to implement multi-level parking facilities in key areas.

Under the purview of iconic projects, the civic body has initiated data collection efforts to formulate detailed project reports for the construction of multi-level parking lots at C.P. Ramasamy Road in Alwarpet, Pulla Avenue in Shenoy Nagar, Valasaravakkam, and Kodambakkam. The surge in traffic congestion, exacerbated by ongoing infrastructure projects such as the Metrorail, has underscored the urgency of implementing sustainable parking solutions. To address this challenge, the Chennai Corporation has prioritised the feasibility study and formulation of detailed project reports for ten potential multi-level parking locations, including Tiruvottiyur, Indira Nagar Third Avenue, NSK Salai, Poonamallee High Road, and Arcot Road.

Upon submission of detailed project reports to the Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board, the Corporation is diligently revising these reports based on recommendations from the Finance Department. Anticipating administrative sanction post-revision, the Corporation aims to commence construction on the identified multi-level parking lots following the lifting of the model code of conduct in June. Moreover, additional multi-level parking lots are slated for development in congested areas like Nungambakkam, further augmenting Chennai’s urban mobility infrastructure. While the pricing of parking spaces in these facilities remains under deliberation, the Corporation is considering adjustments to parking charges to ensure sustainable revenue generation and operational viability for private entities involved in parking lot construction.

Chennai Corporation’s proactive approach towards multi-level parking initiatives signals a significant step towards alleviating congestion and enhancing urban mobility in the city. By leveraging public-private partnerships and prioritising sustainable infrastructure development, Chennai aims to foster a more efficient and seamless urban transport ecosystem for its residents.
