Chennai: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is currently in the process of seeking approval from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) for its ambitious 100-crore shoreline restoration project.
This initiative follows a recent directive from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), mandating CMDA to obtain necessary clearances before proceeding with the project. Under the NGT order, CMDA is required to secure approval from the Union environment ministry for the identification and restoration of specific beaches falling under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ-II) category. Additionally, clearance from the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Disaster Management Authority is mandated for any infrastructural developments planned along the shoreline. The comprehensive shoreline development plan envisaged by CMDA aims to rejuvenate several beaches, including Thiruvottiyur, Kasimedu, and Akkarai to Injambakkam beaches. The focus of the project is on enhancing recreational facilities and infrastructure to meet blue flag standards for clean and safe beaches, aligning with international benchmarks.
While CMDA’s ongoing efforts in cleaning and encroachment removal have been deemed permissible by the NGT, proposed constructions such as pathways, prefab structures, and recreational facilities require explicit approvals. CMDA intends to establish essential amenities such as toilets, walking areas, parking facilities, drinking water provisions, and designated gathering spots along the shoreline. The pursuit of approval from the Union Ministry underscores CMDA’s commitment to sustainable coastal management and environmental conservation. By adhering to regulatory requirements and seeking necessary clearances, CMDA aims to ensure the successful implementation of its shoreline restoration project, contributing to the enhancement of Chennai’s coastal infrastructure and tourism potential.
