Chennai Water Network Expansion Targets OMR Growth
Chennai’s expanding southern corridor is witnessing a fresh push to strengthen essential urban services, with civic authorities reviewing large-scale works aimed at extending drinking water and sewerage coverage across fast-growing neighbourhoods along Old Mahabalipuram Road. The projects are expected to improve access to basic infrastructure in areas that have experienced rapid residential development over the past decade.
A senior city utility official inspected multiple sites in the Sholinganallur region, including Semmenchery, Kannagi Nagar and Okkiam-Thoraipakkam, where works worth nearly ₹574 crore are under implementation. The review comes as authorities attempt to ensure that infrastructure delivery keeps pace with population growth and rising housing demand in Chennai’s southern suburbs. The ongoing water infrastructure projects form part of a broader effort to address long-standing disparities between urban expansion and public utility provision. Urban planners have often highlighted that residential growth along the information technology corridor has outpaced the availability of integrated civic services, creating pressure on groundwater resources and increasing dependence on private water supplies.
In Semmenchery, pipeline networks are being extended and additional overhead storage facilities are being developed to improve the distribution system. More than 50,000 residents are expected to benefit once the scheme becomes operational. Similar interventions are underway in neighbouring settlements, where growing populations have intensified demand for reliable water access. Parallel investments are also being directed towards wastewater management. In Okkiam-Thoraipakkam, new sewage pumping stations and an extensive underground pipeline network are under construction to facilitate household connections and reduce reliance on septic tanks. Experts say strengthening underground sewerage systems is essential for protecting water bodies and improving environmental resilience in coastal and low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding. The water infrastructure projects are increasingly being viewed as critical components of climate-sensitive urban development. Efficient sewage treatment and dependable water supply systems can help cities reduce contamination risks, preserve local ecosystems and support healthier living conditions for residents.
Infrastructure specialists note that Chennai’s southern growth belt continues to attract housing and commercial investments, making utility upgrades essential for sustaining economic activity.
