Chennai Traffic Police Plans Citywide Crackdown on Violations

Chennai Traffic Police will conduct a citywide enforcement drive on October 31, registering cases against motorists who violate traffic rules as part of a special ‘Zero Tolerance Day’ initiative aimed at improving road safety.

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) said the drive would cover all major and arterial roads in the city. The enforcement action will target motorists found violating traffic regulations, with the police urging road users to comply with rules during the operation.

The initiative is intended to ensure stricter adherence to traffic regulations and help prevent road accidents. In its appeal to the public, the traffic police asked motorists to obey traffic signals, wear helmets and seat belts, avoid speeding and dangerous driving, and refrain from using mobile phones while driving.

The enforcement plan places road-user behaviour at the centre of the city’s immediate road-safety response. Compliance with signals and the use of helmets and seat belts are among the measures highlighted by the police, alongside action against speeding, dangerous driving and mobile-phone use while driving.

The GCTP said the purpose of the initiative was to protect human lives and prevent road accidents. Its appeal covers motorists using the city’s major and arterial roads, where the special enforcement drive will be carried out on Saturday.

The announcement also makes clear that the drive will involve case registration against motorists found violating traffic rules. This gives the operation an enforcement focus rather than limiting it to a public-awareness campaign.

For commuters, the police advisory means that motorists travelling across Chennai on October 31 will be expected to follow traffic signals and observe basic safety requirements throughout their journeys. Riders have been asked to wear helmets, while drivers and passengers have been urged to use seat belts. Motorists have also been told not to use mobile phones while driving or engage in speeding and dangerous driving.

The traffic police have appealed to the public to cooperate with the enforcement drive and adhere to traffic rules to ensure safer roads for all. The operation is scheduled to take place across the city on October 31, with the GCTP’s stated focus remaining strict compliance and the prevention of road accidents.
