Chennai Sewage Gaps Deepen North Chennai Water Risks
Several residential streets in Tiruvottiyur remain outside Chennai’s underground sewage network years after sewerage infrastructure was laid across much of the zone. The gap is forcing households to depend on individual sanitation arrangements while ageing pipelines elsewhere struggle with blockages, raising concerns over wastewater entering roads, drains and potentially the local groundwater system.
The North Chennai sewage network gap covers streets in and around VP Nagar, Ramanathapuram, Mettu Street, Thiruveethiamman Nagar, Perumal Koil Street, Jothi Nagar and TS Gopal Nagar, among other locations. Adi Dravidar Colony is also reported to remain without coverage.A local elected representative said the issue has been repeatedly raised with the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) over several years, including through ward and zonal-level meetings. The demand is for new sewer pipelines in uncovered streets and rehabilitation of older lines that no longer provide reliable service.
The problem points to a broader weakness in Chennai’s approach to underground infrastructure. Sewerage projects can transform neighbourhood sanitation, but incomplete coverage leaves residents dependent on fragmented systems even as surrounding areas become increasingly urbanised.According to the local representative, about 625 streets in Ward 4 were excluded when sewerage works were carried out in the Tiruvottiyur area between 2007 and 2010. The figure highlights how infrastructure planned for an earlier urban footprint can quickly become inadequate as residential development expands.Existing networks are also facing operational pressure. Frequent blockages and delays in clearing them can cause wastewater to spill onto public roads. Beyond the immediate nuisance, repeated sewage exposure can affect local drainage channels and create contamination pathways, particularly where wastewater comes into contact with soil or shallow groundwater.
The environmental concern is significant in North Chennai, where groundwater quality already faces pressure from rapid urbanisation, industrial activity and coastal conditions. That does not establish that the missing sewer connections have contaminated groundwater, but it makes effective wastewater containment particularly important. The North Chennai sewage network also has an economic dimension. Poor sanitation can reduce neighbourhood liveability, increase household maintenance costs and weaken the quality of public infrastructure supporting residential growth. For lower-income communities, the burden can be especially acute when municipal services remain incomplete.Urban planners argue that future sewerage expansion should prioritise uncovered streets alongside systematic replacement of deteriorating pipelines. Mapping gaps, improving maintenance response times and coordinating sewerage works with road and drainage upgrades could reduce repeated excavation and improve service reliability. The immediate challenge is therefore not simply adding more pipes. Chennai needs to ensure that sewerage coverage keeps pace with neighbourhood growth and that existing infrastructure remains functional. For Tiruvottiyur residents, closing these long-standing gaps would be a basic step towards safer, more resilient urban services.
