Chennai authorities have rolled out fresh traffic interventions along the busy Inner Ring Road corridor connecting Thathankuppam and Rajamangalam, introducing three new turning points intended to improve vehicle movement during peak periods. The move highlights the growing challenge of managing mobility on heavily urbanised stretches while maintaining efficient access for residents and commercial districts.
The revised traffic arrangement, set to be implemented on a trial basis, comes amid increasing pressure on Chennai’s road infrastructure as vehicle numbers continue to rise. Officials overseeing traffic management believe the changes could help reduce bottlenecks along the 200 Feet Road, a major east-west link serving residential neighbourhoods and local businesses. Under the new configuration, motorists entering from several feeder roads will be required to follow designated left-turn movements before accessing specific turning facilities positioned at key points along the corridor. The strategy seeks to minimise conflicting traffic movements that often slow vehicles during morning and evening rush hours.
Urban mobility specialists note that such interventions, while relatively inexpensive compared with large infrastructure projects, can significantly improve travel times when supported by effective enforcement and public awareness. Better traffic circulation also has wider implications for fuel consumption and air quality, both of which remain important concerns for a city experiencing rapid urban expansion.The latest initiative forms part of broader efforts to optimise existing road networks rather than relying solely on costly capacity additions. Transport planners increasingly argue that improving traffic management can deliver immediate benefits while complementing long-term investments in public transport and sustainable mobility infrastructure. In a parallel development, traffic diversions will be enforced on Elephant Gate Road from June 20 to facilitate stormwater drain construction being undertaken by civic authorities. Vehicles travelling from Central and the Choolai area towards Perambur, Vyasarpadi and Pulianthope will be redirected through Demellows Road, while the affected stretch of Elephant Gate Road will operate in a single direction for vehicles heading towards the city centre.
Infrastructure experts point out that stormwater projects are becoming increasingly important for Chennai, where extreme rainfall events and urban flooding have underscored the need for climate-resilient infrastructure. However, temporary disruptions arising from such works require careful traffic planning to minimise inconvenience to commuters and economic activity.
