Chennai has witnessed a surge in road excavation activities undertaken by various civic agencies. These projects, while aimed at improving urban infrastructure, have inadvertently led to frequent damages to underground power cables, resulting in unplanned power outages across the city.
The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has raised concerns over these incidents, emphasizing the need for better coordination among departments to prevent such disruptions. The Greater Chennai Corporation, Highways Department, Metro Rail, and the Water Supply and Sewerage Board are among the agencies involved in these civic projects. However, the lack of a unified approach and inadequate sharing of underground utility maps have led to repeated instances of power cable damages during excavation works. These damages have not only caused power outages but have also posed significant safety risks to workers and residents alike.
In response to the growing concern, TNPDCL convened a high-level meeting with senior officials from the aforementioned departments and contracting agencies. During the discussion, officials were instructed to obtain underground cable layout maps from TNPDCL prior to commencing any excavation activities. Contractors and officials were advised to align their execution plans with the information provided to avoid damaging underground electricity lines during future roadwork operations. Furthermore, it was directed that if any underground cables are encountered during roadwork, operations must be halted immediately. The responsible teams should then consult the nearest TNPDCL office to gather details about the electrical pathway to prevent accidents or further outages. By following these protocols, incidents of electrical accidents and disruptions to the public can be significantly reduced, officials stated.
The meeting was also attended by senior officials from the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation and other relevant departments, highlighting the seriousness of the issue and the collective responsibility in addressing it. Chennai’s push towards modernizing its infrastructure is commendable. However, the recurring damages to underground power cables during roadworks underscore the need for a more integrated approach to urban development. Ensuring the safety and reliability of essential services like electricity should be a paramount consideration in any civic project.
As the city continues to grow and evolve, fostering better communication and coordination among various departments will be crucial in building a resilient and sustainable urban environment. By prioritizing the protection of existing utilities and implementing stringent safety protocols, Chennai can pave the way for a future where development and public welfare go hand in hand.
