A late-night operational lapse narrowly avoided becoming a major railway disaster in the jurisdiction of Chennai Division after an express service departing Arakkonam Junction railway station was found moving towards an unintended route before locomotive crews intervened and halted the train.
The incident involved the Puducherry Kacheguda Express shortly after it departed the junction on June 28. Railway sources indicated that while operational clearance had been issued for movement towards one corridor, track settings directed the train towards a different line, creating a mismatch between signalling instructions and the physical route available to the service. Locomotive pilots identified the discrepancy in time and stopped the train before it progressed further onto the incorrect alignment.
