Indian Railways has introduced a temporary long-distance service connecting Rajasthan and Chennai, adding capacity on one of the country’s key inter-regional corridors during the peak summer travel period. The move is expected to ease pressure on regular trains while improving mobility for passengers travelling between western, central and southern India.
The weekly Jodhpur Chennai Summer Special will operate for five round trips between late June and the end of July, covering several important urban centres across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh before reaching the Tamil Nadu capital. Officials indicated that the additional service is intended to manage increased passenger demand during school holidays and seasonal travel. The route passes through major junctions including Bhopal, Itarsi, Nagpur, Vijayawada and Nellore, providing supplementary connectivity for cities that serve as important economic and transit hubs. Transport planners note that such seasonal services help distribute passenger traffic more efficiently and reduce overcrowding on existing routes.
According to railway schedules, the service from Jodhpur will depart every Saturday evening and reach Chennai Beach on Monday. The return operation from MGR Chennai Central will run every Tuesday, arriving in Rajasthan on Thursday. Authorities have planned five services in each direction. The train composition reflects growing demand for air-conditioned travel on long-distance routes. A total of nineteen coaches have been allocated, comprising two Second AC coaches, fifteen Third AC coaches and two luggage-cum-guard vans. Industry observers say the predominance of AC accommodation highlights changing travel preferences among middle-income passengers undertaking journeys exceeding 2,000 kilometres.
Urban mobility experts point out that expanding rail-based transport remains essential for creating lower-emission intercity travel alternatives. Rail networks are generally more energy efficient than road-based modes and can support more sustainable movement of people across regions experiencing rapid urbanisation.The additional service also holds significance for cities located along the central Indian corridor. Junctions such as Bhopal and Itarsi continue to play a critical role in linking northern and southern markets, facilitating labour mobility, tourism and economic exchanges. Seasonal train operations can therefore deliver wider benefits beyond passenger convenience by supporting regional economic activity. With demand for affordable and reliable long-distance transport continuing to rise, transport specialists believe that periodic augmentation of rail services will remain an important tool for managing passenger flows.
