Thousands of households and businesses across several Chennai neighbourhoods are set to experience a planned electricity interruption on July 16 as utility authorities undertake scheduled maintenance works aimed at strengthening the city’s power distribution network. The temporary outage, spanning multiple residential and mixed-use localities, reflects the growing challenge of maintaining ageing urban infrastructure while supporting expanding suburbs and rising electricity demand.
The power shutdown will take place between 9 am and 2 pm in selected areas falling under Sholinganallur, Poonamallee, Avadi, Tirumullaivoyal, Porur, Tiruverkadu and Tambaram. Officials indicated that electricity supply could be restored earlier if maintenance activities conclude ahead of schedule. Among the affected locations are rapidly urbanising residential clusters such as Perumbakkam, Pallikaranai, Queen Victoria Road, Oragadam Society, Kumananchavadi, Paraniputhur and several neighbourhoods around Avadi and Tambaram. These areas have witnessed steady residential growth over the past decade, increasing pressure on local electricity infrastructure and requiring periodic preventive maintenance to minimise unexpected disruptions.
Utility engineers generally undertake such scheduled shutdowns to inspect transformers, overhead distribution lines, switching equipment and other components critical to ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply. Planned maintenance is considered more effective than emergency repairs, particularly during periods of high electricity consumption when network reliability becomes increasingly important for households, commercial establishments and essential public services. The power shutdown is also expected to affect schools operating summer programmes, neighbourhood retail outlets, small manufacturing units, healthcare facilities with non-critical operations and residents working from home.
