A new transport interchange planned beside the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System station at Velachery is set to reshape mobility patterns in southern Chennai, as civic authorities prepare to move ahead with a long-discussed bus terminus and depot project aimed at reducing road congestion and improving public transport integration.
The proposed facility, expected to come up on more than six acres of vacant land adjoining the rail corridor, represents a shift in how rapidly expanding Indian cities are approaching transport planning. Rather than operating isolated systems, urban authorities are increasingly prioritising interchanges that allow commuters to move seamlessly between buses, suburban rail and metro services.
